Hawthorne Christian Academy

The Hawthorne Christian Academy (HCA) is a co-educational private Christian school system, serving students in Pre-school through 12th grade. The Academy is associated with the Hawthorne Gospel Church, and is located on Route 208 in Hawthorne, New Jersey, United States. The school opened in 1981 and had its first graduating class eight years later.〔(FAQs: How old is the school? ), Hawthorne Christian Academy. Accessed June 19, 2007.〕
As of the 2009-10 school year, the school had an enrollment of 413 students (in K-12, plus 28 in Pre-K) and 44.8 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 9.2:1.〔(Hawthorne Christian Academy ), National Center for Education Statistics. Accessed July 23, 2012.〕
HCA has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools since 1996.〔(Hawthorne Christian Academy profile ), Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Accessed June 19, 2007.〕 The school has been accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International since 1981.〔(Hawthorne Christian Academy ), Association of Christian Schools International. ==Athletics==
Since a realignment of all high school athletic leagues in northern New Jersey took effect in the fall of 2010, Hawthorne Christian has been a member of the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference, which operates under the supervision of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA).〔(League Memberships – 2014-2015 ), New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association. Accessed December 15, 2014.〕 Given the school's small size, the school initially was not accepted to participate in any of the area sports leagues. Following a decision by the NJSIAA in February 2008, Hawthorne Christian Academy and Saddle River Day School joined the Olympic Division of the Bergen County Scholastic League as of September 2008.〔Schutta, Gregory. ("Two non-publics enter BCSL Olympic" ), ''The Record (Bergen County)'', February 7. 2008. Accessed February 7, 2008.〕〔(New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association League Memberships – 2009-2010 ), New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, backed up by the Internet Archive as of July 24, 2011. Accessed December 15, 2014.〕
The school has achieved success in track and field competition. The school's Lindsay Van Alstine broke the Passaic County record in the 3200m with the seventh-fastest run in state history.〔Figueroa, Shane. ("Record Setters" ), ''The Record (Bergen County)'', May 15, 2003. Accessed June 19, 2007. "For a school with no track program, Hawthorne Christian Academy certainly did well on the first day of the Passaic County girls track championships. That's because the school's one track representative, Lindsay Van Alstine, ran herself into the Passaic County and New Jersey record books with a dominant performance in the 3,200 meters. Van Alstine broke the Passaic County record for the second time in a week. Her time of 10:31.6 was more than 10 seconds better than second-place finisher Jesse Mizzone and the seventh-fastest time in New Jersey State history."〕
The boys soccer team has made it to the semifinals of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) Parochial North B state championship tournament, falling 2-1 in 2000 to eventual runner-up Don Bosco Preparatory High School,〔(2000 - Parochial North B ), New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association. Accessed June 19, 2007.〕 and by a 5-0 final score in 2003 to eventual winner Morristown-Beard School.〔(2003 Boys Soccer - North Parochial B ), New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association. Accessed June 19, 2007.〕
